Just 28 miles
South West of lands End in Cornwall, U.K lies a group of Islands called the
Isles of Scilly. The Isles of Scilly are one of Britain's best-kept holiday
destination secrets. This 'Lilli putian Archipelago' with its sub- tropical
gardens and a unique way of life, makes it a very special location. You may
if you are visiting the West Country take a day trip to either St Mary's or
Tresco but we along with our friends went for ten days in May 2004. We flew
from Stanstead to Newquay on the north coast of Cornwall and from there, took
another flight of half an hour landing on the island of St Mary’s. We
stayed in Old Town in a very comfortable B & B called The Withies which
was a short walk into the main town of Hugh Town and not too far from the
hundred year old golf course which has magnificent sea views all the way round
the course.
With a population of around 2000 people the Isles of Scilly is much more than
a beautiful group of Islands. All over the islands there are glorious sandy
beaches, wonderful views, magnificent seascapes and abundant wildlife. The
Islands enjoy a very mild climate due to the Gulf Stream current that passes
close by, making them one of Britain's warmest places in the winter and the
sunniest in summer. Visiting the Isles of Scilly is like taking a step back
in time, which is one facet of the Island's character and attraction.
There are five inhabited Islands, St Mary's being the largest, while the others
are Bryher, St Agnes, St Martin's and Tresco.
